Piles of Bills! My Last Unemployment Check and No Hope in Sight!
About 2 years ago I found myself out of work, I had worked in the BIG .com world for a couple of years but in one fell corporate reshuffling I was out on the street.
Unemployment had just run out and there had been no new internet jobs in sight for 6 months now. Add to that I had a wife and 2 children to support! That alone would be plenty to worry about but my son Zach is also autistic, and on the more severe end of the spectrum. Besides our mortgage payments we also had piles of therapy bills to cover as well. My wife had her hands completely full and then some just trying to help and deal with our son’s needs. THIS WAS NOT GOOD! (BTW, I absolutely credit her 100% with giving me this chance to succeed, she was a rock through all this! Thanks again and again Nicki!)
Think a “REAL” Job Means Job Security? I Did Too Until…
I’ve doing internet marketing part-time since 1997 originally just to bring in a few extra $100 bucks a month. In the days before pay per click this was all I could really get just doing natural search engine optimization. After the .com bubble had burst it became even harder so I got a little fed up of struggling along with it.
My real passion and other way of earning a ‘living’ was as a musician and teacher. I had a music degree and am a pretty solid Jazz Sax player but as the old Jazz musician joke goes… “How do you become a millionaire playing Jazz?... start with 2 million! Unless you are a total bad-ass prodigy type player you are in for a tough road to scrape any money together.
In 2002 I thought I had lucked out though! I had gotten skilled and knowledgeable enough at SEO to land a real job with a MAJOR .com! Total right place, right time deal! I had a ‘real’ job (a real cubicle too!) and a real decent salary. Finally, I thought, it’s not what I was looking for but finally earning a decent living felt plenty good at the time!
ALL THAT CAME TO A SUDDEN END!
Being new to the corporate world (or any ‘real’ job world) I had no idea how tenous people’s jobs really were. I thought people just plodded along year after year and If they just showed up and did good enough you’d gradually climb the ladder and it was a lock in for financial security.
I was about to find out though just how quickly a few corporate moves could change everything for a little “worker bee” like me. One day I’m easily covering a mortgage and bills and the next I was cashing unemployment checks and FOOD STAMPS! For the little guy it’s only safe until some corporate big-wig way up wants to “consolidate” and you can suddenly be high and dry with a just handshake and “Good luck, you did well but sorry, we can’t keep you on.”
I Felt Like The Clock Had Out on The Internet Game for ME!
Screw Internet Marketing! I’d Rather Eak out A Living as Musician Again… But now that I had Kids I Needed More $$$ than that!
The Clock Was Ticking for My Whole Family Now!
I was literally weeks away from going back to music full time. I had some connections and even an interview for a gig teaching Jazz at a local college (for less than half my last salary) but at least I’d have some money coming in. It would probably have meant selling our house and downsizing to survive but it’s all I had left.
OK I’ll open the jobs section of the paper 1 more time. There had been nothing for local jobs from Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com or any of the internet job sites for 6 months now! just lots of “work from home” scams that I at least knew enough to steer well clear from!
I grabbed a coffee and a paper at the local gas station, sat in my car and reluctantly opened it like I was once again not going to find that “Golden ticket” in my Wonka bar.
I opened the classifieds a slowly as Charlie unwrapped his final chocolate bar and to my amazement there were the words I’d been looking for for 6 months now in a tiny little ad. “Internet marketer wanted, Google AdWords experience preferred.” I just about dropped my coffee trying to call the number before this mirage disappeared!
We’ll Give You a Shot, but You’ve Got Just 30 Days to Make Something Happen! We Need Results!
The Big .com name on my resume got me in the door but this would be a revolving door if I didn’t come up with some impressive results FAST!
I’d been out of the game for a while now and in the corporate world it was all about maintaining position much more than coming up with a BIG idea that would produce dramatic results FAST. I was getting nervous about blowing this chance JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING I HAD WAS RIDING ON IT. Including my house and far more importantly, my son’s specialist therapies that no insurance co. would help with!
OK… I’m Going to Need Some Help Here…
What are the latest tools? What are the hot strategies? I went to a big search engine news site and there was this guy Perry Marshall talking specifically about Google AdWords. Ok, I’ll sign up for his news letter and I think I signed up for at least 10 other free newsletters that 1st week.
Hmm… One of These Things is Not Like the Others!
The emails started coming in and all of them were hyping this or I’ll reveal my secrets if you buy this etc… all but Perry Marshall’s.
This guy actually had some practical advice I could use right away. After the 1st week at my new job I was getting REAL WINS!
* Remember I’d been doing internet marketing since 1997. I knew BS and Scams like the back of my hand. (once I had been burned a few times!) I could tell after just a few emails that Perry Marshall was legit just by the nature of his advice.*
2 Weeks into my new job my boss says…“That’s Great Work Greg!, If there’s anything else you need just go ahead and order it”
Getting into Gear… He Could’ve Warned Me to Strap My Self In!
Then I got a hold of Perry’s “Definitive Guide to Google AdWords”... and... Oh My God! The rest, as they say, is history.
It was no less than a Goldmine of Proven Tactics and Tested Strategies…The only question was what to start applying 1st! So I just picked out the obvious ones we weren’t doing and dove right in. Before long I was getting comments like:
- You’re the man! Greg.
- Greg, Can you do that for all our Products! (you bet I could!)
- If there’s anything you need, new laptop, any tools or courses just go ahead and get it! (I did!)
- Greg, We’ve decide to give you a 30% raise, you’re doing great! (I’d never even suggested I was looking for a raise!)
This Was All Within Just the First 6 Months Too!
Going into Overdrive! Hang on!
By this time I was now free to just say “We Need to Do this”. I was ready to really go to town now so we signed up for Perry’s 12 week coaching program appropriately named the “Bob Sled Run” . How did that go? This time I’ll let…
